OUR STORY
Female pit bull “Blue” with her owners (female on left, male on right) at 124th St and Frederick Douglass Blvd in Manhattan on 4/7/21, immediately after the attack.
This is female pit bull “Blue” with her owners (female on left, male on right) at the SW corner of 124th St and Frederick Douglass Blvd in Manhattan on 4/7/21, immediately after the attack that killed our 5-year-old dog Zelda.
The dog escaped the owner’s grip on her leash and attacked from about 12 feet away. My husband had to fight her off of Zelda. The owners refused to give their names.
Can you help identify them? Please contact us.
If you see them, please contact 911. The police should collect the owners’ names and contact information so we can file a civil suit. We are not interested in monetary damages. We simply want to pursue removal of this dog from the streets by a judge.
KNOW THE FACTS
Zelda Bell Correa
Since the attack, we have learned that, although any bite of a human is required to be reported to NYPD, 311, and/or the NYC Health Department, there is no protocol for reporting or acting on animal-on-animal bites in NY. Neither any of these agencies, nor ASPCA or Animal Care Centers (ACC), can take reports - let alone act - when a dog attacks a pet.
A quick Google search returns multiple stories about the painful and often deadly results of this law, which fails to ensure that dangerous dogs are muzzled, removed from irresponsible owners, or removed from the streets. Too many pets (including Zelda), children, and even adults in New York, have endured dangerous dog attacks by animals with prior history of violence and/or lack of owner control.
Prevent tragedies like ours:
Especially if you have small pets or children, beware of strange dogs, even if they seem friendly, restrained, or far away. They may have a history of attack. Owners may not be in control.
Don't ever leave small dogs tied up. They can be stolen as bait for dog fighting.
When you see a dog owner failing to leash or control their dog, report them to the police immediately.
Report suspicions of animal abuse and neglect.
